Lanthanum Acetate Hydrate (La(CH₃COO)₃·4H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Lanthanum acetate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula La(C₂H₃O₂)₃·4H₂O, appearing as white crystals. It is soluble in water (~25g per 100mL at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes into lanthanum oxide.

Preparation of Lanthanum Acetate Hydrate

  1. Dissolve an appropriate amount of lanthanum oxide in 50% acetic acid solution using steam bath heating.
  2. Filter if any oxide residue remains at the container bottom.
  3. Heat the clarified solution in a 75°C water bath to evaporate most of the solvent.
  4. Crystals form upon cooling. Collect by filtration.
  5. Dry the crystals in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate under reduced pressure to obtain hydrated lanthanum acetate.
