Nanometer gadolinium oxide is a white powder with a very high melting point (~2420°C) and a density of about 5.407 g/cm³. It exhibits ferromagnetism at room temperature and possesses the highest magnetic moment of any rare earth element. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acids, with a cubic crystal structure. Gadolinium has one of the highest thermal neutron absorption cross-sections. Furthermore, the Gd³⁺ ion, with its 7 unpaired electrons, is the core component of MRI contrast agents. Storage sealed in a dry environment is advised.
