China Discovers Major Offshore Phosphate-Yttrium (Heavy Rare Earth) Deposit, Strengthening National Resource Security

Recently, the Shandong Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources announced the discovery of a large offshore phosphate-yttrium deposit, a critical heavy rare earth resource, in China. This new find demonstrates notable progress in marine mineral exploration and significantly boosts the country’s rare earth resource security.

The newly identified deposit contains an estimated 160,000 tons of mineral resources. In addition to phosphate-yttrium ore, substantial reserves of monazite and zirconium-hafnium ores were also discovered, all of which have reached large-scale status. Phosphate-yttrium ore, with 61.40% yttrium trioxide content, is an important raw material for extracting yttrium and yttrium-group rare earths. This type of heavy rare earth ore is highly sought-after due to its rich content of valuable elements and mature commercial production processes, meeting high global demands for rare earth processing.

Significantly, the deposit’s monazite and zirconium-hafnium ores enhance the overall resource value and integrated recovery potential. Monazite is a polymetallic ore rich in uranium (0.3%-0.8%), thorium (4%-12%), and rare earth oxides (39%-60%), making it a key source for extracting uranium, thorium, and various rare earth products.

As rare earths are strategic resources, securing stable supply chains is crucial to national defense and high-tech industry stability. In recent years, China has reinforced export controls on rare earth materials and technologies, further emphasizing safety, supply stability, and industry order. The discovery of this significant offshore deposit by the Shandong Bureau not only strengthens China’s national resource security but also marks a critical step in expanding mineral exploration from land to sea, further enhancing the nation’s strategic capabilities in heavy rare earth resources.
