Erbium Oxide (Er₂O₃): Glass Clarifying Agent/Coloring Agent, Er:YAG Laser Crystals, Nuclear Reactor Control Material

Erbium oxide is a pink powder with the chemical formula Er₂O₃. It is soluble in inorganic acids but insoluble in water, readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide, and transforms into hexagonal crystals when heated to 1300°C without melting.

 

Applications

  1. Glass Industry: Acts as a clarifier and coloring agent.
  2. Laser Crystals: Additive for special scintillation crystals (e.g., Er:YAG).
  3. Nuclear Reactors: Control material in nuclear applications.

Synthesis of Erbium Oxide

Produced primarily via the oxalate precipitation method:

  1. Use erbium chloride or nitrate solution as the raw material.
  2. Adjust pH to 2 with oxalic acid, then precipitate erbium oxalate by adding ammonia.
  3. After aging, separate and wash the precipitate.
  4. Dry at 110°C and calcine at 900–1000°C to obtain erbium oxide.
