Ytterbium fluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula YbF₃, appearing as a white powder with density of 8.2 g/cm³. It melts at 1052°C and boils above 2200°C. Insoluble in water and difficult to dissolve in hydrochloric, nitric or sulfuric acids, but soluble in perchloric acid. Hygroscopic in air but relatively stable.

1. Used to prepare scintillators for modern medical imaging and nuclear science
2. Laser materials for rare-earth crystals
3. Fluoride glass optical fibers and rare-earth infrared glasses
4. Manufacturing special alloys and electrolytic production of ytterbium metal

Production Method

1. Purify raw chloride salts by removing impurities
2. Introduce carbon dioxide to form carbonates
3. React with high-purity fluorine in special equipment to produce fluoride salts
4. Wash reaction products with hot purified water
5. Dry and dehydrate in vacuum furnace
6. Adjust temperature to remove free fluorine
7. Introduce hydrogen gas to transform crystal phase and modify refractive index
