Scandium Oxide (Sc₂O₃): SmCo Magnets, IR Glass, Photo Coatings, Exhaust Catalysts, E-Additives

Scandium oxide, with the chemical formula Sc2O3, appears as white powder in pure form and slightly yellowish when impure. It is insoluble in water and alkalis but soluble in acids. Slightly hygroscopic, it easily absorbs water and carbon dioxide from air, converting to basic scandium carbonate.

 

Applications

  1. Used as additive in alloy materials (Al-Sc alloys, Mg-Sc alloys, etc.)
  2. Serves as additive for special scintillation crystal growth (TSAG/GGSG)
  3. Applied in special scintillation ceramics
  4. Functions as activator in new light source materials
  5. Used as additive for scandium-stabilized zirconia

Production Method of Scandium Oxide

The primary production method is oxalate precipitation:

  1. Use scandium chloride or scandium nitrate solution as raw material
  2. Adjust pH to 2 with oxalic acid
  3. Precipitate scandium oxalate by adding ammonia water
  4. After thermal aging, separate and wash the precipitate
  5. Dry at 110°C
  6. Calcinate at 900-1000°C to obtain scandium oxide
