Zirconium Oxide (ZrO₂): Refractory Linings, Thermal Barrier Coatings,Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Chemical formula: ZrO₂. It is the main oxide of zirconium, normally appearing as white, odorless and tasteless crystals. Insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid. Its chemically inert nature, combined with properties like high melting point, high resistivity, high refractive index and low thermal expansion coefficient, make it an important high-temperature resistant material, ceramic insulator, ceramic opacifier, and raw material for synthetic diamonds.

About Zirconium Oxide
Zirconyl chloride pyrolysis method: Zircon is fused with caustic soda at 650°C, then the molten mass is leached with hot water to separate silicon (as sodium silicate) from sodium zirconate. After treatment with sulfuric acid, zirconium sulfate solution is obtained. Further purification followed by addition of ammonia water precipitates zirconium hydroxide. The hydroxide is dissolved in hydrochloric acid to obtain zirconyl chloride, which after evaporation, crystallization, crushing and calcination yields zirconium oxide product. Alternatively, high-purity zirconium oxide can be prepared by thermal decomposition or oxidative decomposition of easily purified zirconium compounds.
Zirconium oxide has excellent chemical properties. It is a weakly acidic oxide, showing sufficient stability against alkaline solutions and many acidic solutions (except hot concentrated H₂SO₄, HF and H₃PO₄). Crucibles made of ZrO₂ can be used to melt various metals including potassium, sodium, aluminum and iron. It is also stable against sulfides and phosphides. Many silicate melts and slags have no effect on sintered ZrO₂.
