Thulium Oxide (Tm₂O₃): Portable X-ray Devices, Tm:YAG Crystals, Nuclear Reactor Control

Thulium oxide is a light green powder with chemical formula Tm₂O₃. It is soluble in mineral acids but insoluble in water, and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide. When heated to 1300°C, it transforms into hexagonal crystals without melting.

 

Applications

  1. Used in portable X-ray transmission devices
  2. Serves as additive for growing special scintillation crystals (Tm:YAG)
  3. Applied as control material in nuclear reactors

Production Method

Thulium oxide is primarily produced by oxalate precipitation:

  1. Use thulium chloride or nitrate solution as raw material
  2. Adjust pH to 2 with oxalic acid
  3. Precipitate thulium oxalate by adding ammonia solution
  4. After heating and aging, separate and wash the precipitate
  5. Dry at 110°C
  6. Finally calcine at 900-1000°C to obtain thulium oxide
