Ytterbium Oxide (Yb₂O₃): Alloys, Yb:YAG Crystals, Ceramics, Glass Additives, Lighting/Catalysts

Chemical formula: Yb₂O₃; Molecular weight: 394.08. Pure product is colorless powder, appearing pale brown or yellow when containing thulium oxide. Slightly hygroscopic, easily absorbs water and carbon dioxide from air to form basic ytterbium carbonate. It has the weakest alkalinity in the yttrium group except lutetium oxide. Insoluble in water and cold acids, soluble in hot dilute acids.

 

Applications

  1. For manufacturing special alloys
  2. As additive for special scintillation crystal growth like Yb:YAG
  3. For special ceramic dielectric materials
  4. As additive for special glass
  5. For industrial luminous carbon rods and catalysts etc.

About Ytterbium Oxide
The main production method of ytterbium oxide is oxalate precipitation. Using ytterbium chloride or ytterbium nitrate solution as raw material, adjust pH to 2 with oxalic acid, then precipitate ytterbium oxalate by adding ammonia water. After heating and aging, separate, wash, dry at 110°C, and finally calcine at 900-1000°C to obtain ytterbium oxide.
